چکیده
The intensive rearing of cattle includes a whole range of technological processes that should enable continuous production and optimal use of production capacity. In such circumstances, newborn calves have to adapt to different environmental factors, including diet. The technology of growing calves diet was initially based solely on feeding colostrum and then milk. After that, the food introduced other feed (hay, feed mixture), to a three-month milk completely excluded from the diet. Colostrum contains proteins, essential and not essential amino acids, fatty acids, lactose, vitamins, macroand microelements. In addition, colostrum contains non nutritive ingredients like immunoglobulins, peptides, hormones, growth factors, cytokines, steroid hormones, thyroid hormones, nucleotides, polyamines and the enzymes [1-3]. At high-yielding dairy cows metabolic disorders such as ketosis, fatty liver syndrome, puerperal paresis, rumen acidosis and laminitis, have been caused by many factors, such as unbalanced diet and inadequate breeding [4-10]. The aim of this letter is to provide information on health status of calves and high-yielding dairy cows on farms with tie-stalls housing system.

Housing system and herd size interactions in Norwegian dairy herds; associations with performance and disease incidence
BACKGROUND According to the Norwegian animal welfare regulations, it has been forbidden to build new tie-stall barns since the end of 2004. Previous studies have shown that cow performance and health differ between housing systems. The interaction between housing system and herd size with respect to performance and disease incidence has not been evaluated. METHODS Cow performance and health i...
متن کاملDairy cows welfare quality in tie-stall housing system with or without access to exercise
BACKGROUND Tie-stall housing of dairy cows is used extensively worldwide, despite of the welfare concerns regarding the restriction of voluntary movement and limitation of expression of the cows' natural behaviour. The aim of this study was to compare the welfare quality of dairy cows kept in two types of tie-stall housing systems: with regular outdoor exercise and without access to exercise. I...
متن کاملThe Main Causes of Calf Mortality in Dairy Farms in Poland
Calf mortality is one of important problems of calf rearing in dairy farms worldwide. Besides, several noninfectious factors, such as management around birth, colostrum management, calf housing, feeding system, hygiene and pathogens, play an important role in calf rearing. The aim of the study was to show the most common causes of mortality of calves up to 90 d of their lives. Some data are ava...
متن کاملThe motivation of cows to walk as thwarted by tethering.
Cows are often housed in tie-sheds for some part of the year (from 20 to 80% of adult cows in European countries). By contrast, regulations aiming at improving animal welfare generally provide for more opportunity to express behavior and so limit tethering (the European directive for sows). To inform current debate on whether cows should be tethered from an animal welfare point of view, 2 exper...
متن کاملHousing, Feeding and Management of Calves and Replacement Heifers in Swedish Dairy Herds
A questionnaire was sent to 1500 randomly selected dairy herds in Sweden, asking for general information about the herds, including routines from birth to first calving and also routines at breeding, calving and during the grazing period. Fifty-eight percent of the questionnaires were returned. The preweaned calves were kept in individual calf pens in 68% and in group housing systems in 28% of ...
